Growing Leaders, by Tim Elmore, is an article that discusses the lack of teachability, initiative, responsibility and energy from young interns today. Elmore writes about his friends's unfortunate experience with his college interns but argues that he himself still believes in the potential of today's college students. Elmore blames the generation previous for unsuccessfully preparing these interns that are unfit for the business world. The author states that if you approach an intern with the mentality that their new position is a twelve-week interview, then they realize every day is a time to observe and be observed.
Thanks to Tim Elmore I now understand that I am truly in a year-long interview and that every day is real opportunity to grow and help the organization grow. The only way this is possible is if I go in everyday with the mindset of being efficient. I will not sit idly by and force my co-workers to initiate every idea or action. I will have a leader mindset and refuse to lack passion for my work. The most relevant thing Elmore taught me in his writings is that an internship is really a simulator for the real working world and that I am blessed to have the opportunity to utilize it.
